It happens beneath a mosquito net at home. At a community meeting under a mango tree. At a rural health center. And sometimes in the arms of a parent trying to persuade a frightened child to swallow the medicine that will help keep her safe.

I spent time this week in Guinea documenting malaria prevention efforts supported by the Global Fund and implemented through ChildFund and local health partners.

What interested me photographically was the chain connecting all of it — community health volunteers bringing information and preventive treatment directly to families, parents putting that knowledge into practice at home, and health workers providing care when children become sick.

Malaria is preventable and treatable. But making that true for a child requires a health system that reaches all the way to her front door.

Today we hiked (and swam) a small piece of the Appalachian Trail. We met a hiker from the UK who was halfway through all 2,000+ miles. Someday, I hope to trade day hikes for the whole adventure. 🥾🌲

Traveling during the "off season" in Oaxaca meant dealing with the occasional downpour, but it also meant having beaches, waterfalls, and hiking trails mostly to ourselves.

Avoiding the crowds turned out to be easy. Avoiding the snakes? Not so much. 🐍
