Moms (and a dad) bring their infant and newborn children to a routine vaccination day at a @ChildFund supported health care center in Katakwi District, Uganda. ChildFund's community networks help to get the word out to rural areas when events like this occur, mobilizing caregivers to bring their children for crucial preventative care against diseases like polio, measels and rotavirus. a world where the necessities of life take so much more time and effort to obtain, it's no wonder why play often gets pushed to the backburner. @childfund 's Come Play With Me project helps caregivers understand the importance of play in their children's development and in strengthening relationships at home. Learning tablets containing educational games and activities were introduced to families during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have continued to be a helpful resource for learning and engagement at home.

"When I was a child, my parents saw play as a waste of time. Now I see that playing is instrumental in my children's growth," says Milly, age 37, a mother of six.

"Once I had a drunk midwife who slapped me too hard," says Judith, 42, complaining of one experience she had at home while giving birth. "In the health center I am treated with respect. They told me exactly what was going on during the birth." The mother of eight recently delivered at this maternity ward constructed by @ChildFund in Kwania District, Uganda. While most women who deliver at home won't have such quite a colorful story to tell, delivering at home in Uganda without the presence of skilled clinicians can be extremely dangerous for both a mother and her baby.

I visited this facility today in northern Uganda where expectant mothers receive antenatal care and can give birth in a room outfitted with a delivery bed, proper equipment and solar-powered lighting so patients and clinicians can see at night. ChildFund constructed and outfitted the maternity block several years ago, but continues to perform outreach in the surrounding community on the importance of giving birth in a healthcare facility. In a career first, Judith also named her newborn baby named after me. Little Jacob is doing well and looks forward to going home soon.
