Istanbul's old city walls form the backdrop to dozens of coveted green spaces in one of the world's largest cities. They're also haven to many a junk yard, gardening spot, cemetery and tree that sprouts from their ancient cracks and archways.

Dating back as far as the 4th century, they've been variously added to, bored through, left to crumble and restored over the years. They're a fascinating representation of the passage of time and the perfect distraction from the noise and chaos of the surrounding city.

For this mountaintop community in Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico, a perilous walk downhill to the spring and back was the only option for obtaining one of life's most basic resources. "You can only carry so much water back up the mountain. 15 liters at a time at most," says Delores, a mother of three. Now, she and other members of her community access their water from 5,000 liter tanks installed through a 2022 @childfund project. Rainwater is channeled and filtered for debris from the rooftop with each passing rainfall, while the massive tank volume is sufficient to get each family through dry times. "We're able to keep a lot cleaner now that we don't have to ration water to the last drop," says Dolores. "We couldn't bathe or wash dishes every day before. Now we have that 'luxury.' "
