Essay: Sugar, not so Sweet

Child laborers of the Philippines

The central island of Negros forms the heart of the sugar cane industry in the Philippines. Some children are employed here on large haciendas, preferring the temporary glitter of a small paycheck to the long term benefits of an education. This set of photographs was taken for ChildFund International as part of coverage of their LEAP program, which has successfully returned many children from the fields to school and given families alternative sources of livelihoods.
